Do you need antivirus software on your android phone? PDF Print E-mail

The answer is Yes. You do need an antivirus software on an android as with any device that transmits or receives data.

The first ever cell phone virus appeared in 2004 and was transmitted via Bluetooth showing how easily it can be spread. This was only a test at the time by malware developers to show how simple it was to do.

An antivirus software is required because you are as vulnerable to many viruses similarly as you are on the PC and laptop because android phones are like mini computers, just not as powerful but as easily targeted.

Below are listed a few points to help avoid viruses.

  • Do not download apps/APKs from untrusted sources. Places such as 4shared and rapidshare are not recommended places for downloading APKs and apps.
The person uploading the APK could have modified it before uploading. This could be a virus or even a keylogger which records everything you type. Stick to trusted sources such as the Google play (Android marketplace) or the amazon appstore.
  • Always keep your Bluetooth off unless required.
  • Always install an anti-virus software on your phone. Do not forget to keep it updated because new viruses and threats appear all the time.
  • Never lend your memory card to anyone it may get infected if your friend has an infected phone.

What is a mobile phone virus

A mobile phone virus is similar to a computer virus. It is specially designed for a mobile phone spreading from one vulnerable phone to another very quickly.

The virus can hide itself within the hardware on your phone many times being unrecognisable or found. It can also show itself as an application, download or add on.

Viruses, now-a-days, are quite advanced because they can corrupt your important data or simply erase it. The latest viruses are even capable of sending fake messages or even spreading itself via Bluetooth.

What if i get a virus?

As previously mentioned, by ensuring you have an up to date antivirus on your android and using "safe" sites reduces the risk. However, if you were unfortunate to receive a virus the suggestion would be to download an antivirus as soon as possible. If this is unsuccessful then resetting your phone may eliminate it.

As phones become better with technology so will the viruses. For every virus that gets removed another one is being created.

Common modes of spreading viruses

  • Bluetooth
  • MMC card (Multimedia-card)
  • Internet
  • PC / Laptop

Always be safe, only Bluetooth to "safe" people/sites.

Never share your Multimedia Card.

Be aware at all times of what is being transmitted from your PC/Laptop.

Keep antivirus software up to date at all times.

Below are a few free and paid antivirus software you may want to use however please do so at your own risk. Ensuring research is done before installing any applications/software to your device.
